By the beginning of January The Stolichny Branch of “MegaFon” OJSC had completed a large-scale project on mobile network development in Moscow underground.
Today stable coverage is provided almost for all metro stations. Now subscribers, using underground transport, can make calls, send SMS and link to Internet through MegaFon mobile network.
— It took five years for MegaFon to develop the mobile network in metro. Other operators constructed their networks for much longer period. In course of the project our specialists gained unique experience of communication organization on the most comprehensive transport object of the city which provides services to millions of passengers every day. We have placed the base stations so that to provide high-quality mobile communication not merely on stations and passages but a number of tunnels. The next stage of the project is an active development of 3G in metro i.e. mobile communication of new generation, — says Igor Akulinin, First Deputy Director of The Stolichny Branch of “MegaFon” OJSC.
On New Year’s Eve Muscovites got access to 3G services on several stations of Zamoskvoretskaya and Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya lines. In 2010 the mobile operator plans to open new 3G base stations in metro and continue works on further improvement of the network in railway stages between stations.
